Livestock judging is the evaluation of livestock. After evaluating the classes each person gives oral sets of reasons. The contests are often time-consuming and challenging. But, Churubusco Livestock Judging has pulled through and brought home some impressive wins.

Over the past decades, Churubusco Livestock Judging has improved greatly. With the help of Trinna Keener, Jacey Keener and Colton Geiger, the team of Mallory Johnson, Devyn Gaff, Cole Sobasky and Dailon Dice and the team of Maggie Johnson, Myah Bear and Wyatt Johnson made it to the State Livestock Judging Contest at Purdue. This is the first time “since the microwave has been invented” that a Churubusco Livestock Judging Team has made it to state.

After the first contest, the team then grew from eight people to 14. Lance, Julia, Zach, and Kaleb Gaerte joined along with Marcus DeBolt and McKenna Sobasky. The team most recently brought home more winnings at Cloverdale Livestock Judging Contest. The team called “Churubusco FFA Gold”, Maggie Johnson, Mallory Johnson, Myah Bear, and Devyn Gaff, brought home the win, placing 1st in both the overall and reasons divisions. Myah Bear placed 6th overall with Maggie Johnson right behind her in 8th. In the reason division, the team took the top five titles with Devyn Gaff winning the division, Myah Bear placing 3rd, Maggie Johnson 4th and Mallory Johnson 5th. The other team “Churubusco FFA Black”, Lance Gaerte, Kaleb Gaerte, Cole Sobasky and Dailon Dice placed 13th. The team placed 6th in the reasons category.

The Churubusco Livestock Judging program now has the youngest team they have ever had. The team of Delaney Gaff, McKenna Sobasky, James Earnhart, and Julia Gaerte placed 2nd in the Novice Reasons division and 1st in the reasons category. James Earnhart lead the team placing 4th and Delaney Gaff won the reasons category.

Churubusco livestock judging not only has good teams now, but had some in the past too. Trinna recalls one of her most successful teams comprised of Jacey Keener, Colton Geiger and Charlie Huelsenbeck. She has great things to say about each contestant.

The head coach, Trinna Keener, is very impressed by her ‘students’ and cannot wait to see what they will accomplish in the near future. In the near future the teams hope to make it to state and even then to nationals. When asked they hope to make it to Denver. I recently sat down with one of the members, Mallory Johnson. She enjoys judging because it’s fun. Her team-mates would agree. Churubusco Livestock Judging has many great things to come!
